Robert I. Thornton
PRACTICE
Robert ("Bob") Thornton is a founding member of ThorntonGroutFinnigan LLP, practicing exclusively in the areas of insolvency and banking law, including workouts, refinancings, receiverships, bankruptcies, mortgage remedies, lender liability, enforcement of security and rights between debtors and creditors, generally. Mr. Thornton was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1984.
Mr. Thornton is recognized as a leading insolvency practitioner in Canada by The World's Leading Lawyers, published by Chambers and Partners of London, England. This international publication has described him as "a good negotiator", "bright and impressive" and "a solution-oriented practitioner" who is "easy to deal with".
PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT
Mr. Thornton primarily acts for financial institutions across a broad spectrum of industries including airline and other transportation entities, entertainment, knowledge-based industries, manufacturing, retail and real estate. Mr. Thornton is currently involved in the Hollinger restructuring and acts for the largest supplier to Nortel. He was recently involved in the reorganization of Bell Canada and Calpine, and was the lead insolvency counsel for GE Capital Aviation Services, Inc., a principal stakeholder in the restructuring of Air Canada. Other files with significant involvement have included Stelco Inc., Canada 3000, General Publishing, Skyreach, Glenview and Olympia & York.
Mr. Thornton is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, INSOL International and the Turnaround Management Association - Toronto Chapter. Mr. Thornton has been a lecturer in the Osgoode Hall Law School Master of Laws program in insolvency and an instructor in the Insolvency Section of the Bar Admission Course. Mr. Thornton lectures and writes regularly for various professional associations on insolvency matters and matters relating to the enforcement of rights as between debtors and creditors. Mr. Thornton is a member of the Insolvency and Business Law Sections of the Ontario Bar Association.
EDUCATION
Mr. Thornton obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Western Ontario in 1979 and Bachelor of Laws (with distinction) from the University of Western Ontario in 1982.
