John T. Porter
PRACTICE
John Porter recently left the partnership of a national law firm to join ThorntonGroutFinnigan LLP. Mr. Porter has extensive experience as both litigation and insolvency counsel in complex, multi-party jurisdictional disputes, and has worked closely with clients and other counsel in a variety of Canadian provinces and the United States. Mr. Porter’s expertise includes trial and appellate advocacy, insolvency, restructuring, class actions, financial services, oppression remedies, and large corporate and commercial disputes. He has appeared as counsel before all levels of Courts in Ontario, and has extensive experience before the Commercial List of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Mr. Porter was a lead counsel for a group of Airport Authorities, which were among the successful appellants in the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision in Canada 3000.
PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT
Mr. Porter is a member of the Advocates’ Society, INSOL International and a number of other professional organizations and associations. Mr. Porter has delivered presentations and seminars with respect to a variety of litigation and insolvency matters.
EDUCATION
Mr. Porter graduated from Trent University in 1979, and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1982. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1984.
