James H. Grout

PRACTICE
James Grout is a founding partner of TGF, practicing exclusively in the fields of insolvency, restructuring and related litigation. Mr. Grout has extensive experience in the automotive, insurance and mining sectors. Mr. Grout regularly represents one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world in connection with its troubled suppliers. Mr. Grout was appointed by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to represent the policyholders and, subsequently the ordinary creditors, in the liquidation of Confederation Life Insurance Company. Mr. Grout has an extensive counsel practice in proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (Canada) and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Canada), representing banks, asset-based lenders, investment funds and other stakeholders. Mr. Grout is regularly retained as independent counsel for court-appointed officers, such as monitors, proposal trustees, receivers and bankruptcy trustees. Mr. Grout has extensive experience with environmentally contaminated sites in insolvency situations. Other sectors of his expertise include food and beverage, retail and clothing. 
 
Mr. Grout has appeared as counsel in proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (Canada), involving A.G. Simpson, Alloy Wheels Industrial, Algoma Steel, Anvil Range Mining, Bramalea, the Canadian Red Cross, Central Capital, Elks, Royal Oak Mines, Stelco Inc. and United Keno Hill Mines. Mr. Grout was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1983.

PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT
Mr. Grout is a member of the Insolvency Section of the Ontario Bar Association, INSOL International and the Insolvency Institute of Canada. Mr. Grout was named as one of the leading 500 lawyers in Canada in the 2002 Guide compiled by LEXPERT and American Lawyer Media. Mr. Grout is recommended by The Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory 2004 as a leading insolvency practitioner in Ontario, was named as a leading insolvency practitioner in Canada by the independent publication, The World’s Leading Lawyers, published by Chambers and Partners of London, England and is a Recommended Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioner in Canada by the 2003/2004 edition of Global Counsel 3000. Mr. Grout has written numerous articles and regularly speaks at legal conferences.

EDUCATION
Mr. Grout obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from University College at the University of Toronto in 1978 and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University in 1981.
